Olivier de Schutter - Université catholique de Louvain

Olivier De Schutter (LL.M., Harvard University ; Ph.D., UCL) is Professor of Human Rights at the Catholic University of Louvain and at the College of Europe (Natolin), and a Member of the Global Law School Faculty at New York University. He chairs the EU Network of Independent Experts on Fundamental Rights, instituted  in 2002 by the European Commission (DG Justice and Home Affairs) acting upon request of the European Parliament in order to monitor compliance with the Charter of Fundamental Rights, and is a member of the European Group of Legal Experts on Discrimination. He is a Visiting Professor at the European University Institute (Florence), at the University of Paris I-Panthéon-Sorbonne, at the Abo Akademi University and Institute for Human Rights at Turku (Finland), and at the University of Coimbra (Portugal). His main areas of interest are the relationship between governance issues and fundamental rights, globalization and human rights, and anti-discrimination law.



The author of "Fonction de juger et droits fondamentaux. Transformation du contrôle juridictionnel dans les ordres juridiques américain et européens" (Bruxelles, Bruylant, 1999), of "Le droit international des droits de l´homme devant le juge national" (Bruxelles, Larcier, 1999), and of "Discriminations et marché du travail. Liberté et égalité dans les rapports d´emploi" (P.I.E. Peter Lang, 2001), he is the editor of a number of books, including "Governance in the European Union / La Gouvernance dans l´Union européenne "(Office for Official Publications of the European Communities,  Luxembourg, 2001 (two linguistic versions)), "La Charte des droits fondamentaux de l´Union européenne". Sa contribution "La protection des droits de l´homme en Europe" (Bruylant, Bruxelles, 2002), "Une Constitution pour l´Europe. Réflexions sur les transformations du droit de l´Union européenne" (Bruxelles, Larcier, 2004), and "Social Rights and Market Forces. Is the open coordination of employment and social policies the future of Social Europe? "(Bruxelles, Bruylant, 2005). His most recent books are "Monitoring Fundamental Rights in the EU. The Role of the Fundamental Rights Agency" (co-edited with Philip Alston, Oxford, Hart, 2005, 282 pages) and "Transnational Corporations and Human Rights" (editor), Hart Publ., Oxford and Portland-Oregon, 2006.
